Vaughan Williams –English Folk Song Suite
Giménez –La boda de Luis Alonso
Elgar – Enigma Variations

This concert is in collaboration with musicians from Orquestra Sinfónica de Pozuelo de Alarcón La Lira (OSPAL), based in Madrid. We are incredibly excited to be joined by their principal conductor, Javier Hermossa Sánchez, and players from the orchestra. After a successful concert in April, with Taraneh players visiting OSPAL in Madrid, the two orchestras are eager to continue their musical collaboration in the UK. From Giménez and de Falla, to Vaughan Williams and Elgar, this colourful programme explores music that celebrates both English and Hispanic traditions.

Nordic Tales
James Hyde – The Ice Palace (world premier)
Edvard Grieg – 2 Elegiac Melodies Op.34
Jean Sibelius – Symphony No.5
Our programme will unravel stories from the Nordics, exploring feelings of grief, nostalgia and the acceptance of our human experience. James Hyde’s exciting new composition was inspired by Norwegian author Tarjei Vesaas’ book of the same name. The Ice Palace explores loss and friendship within the icy Norwegian winter, followed by the nostalgia and grief of a potential ‘Last Spring’ in Grieg’s Two Elegiac melodies. To finish, we will hear sounds of the remote Finnish Landscape in Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5, mirroring the cyclic nature of Finnish seasonal cycles and folk music with it’s many rotating sequences ending up where they began.
Production of The Ice Palace has been in collaboration with Resonate, a dynamic collective of talented post-production engineers, skilled composers, and accomplished instrumentalists, dedicated to bringing audio visions to life. Watercolours
Bedřich Smetana – Vltava (Moldau) from Ma Vlast
Edward Elgar – Sea Pictures, Op.37 with soloist Toluwani Idowu
Helena Munktell – Bränningar, Op.19
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Swan Lake Suite, Op.20a
This concert’s music is all themed around natural water. Water is both universal to the human experience but also fiercely regionally and culturally specific. We hear all this in tonight’s programme – we hear music as important to national culture explicitly in Smetana’s Vltava and implicitly in Elgar’s Sea Pictures, we are reminded of the power of water as a backdrop for storytelling in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite, and of the sea’s power, violence, and expansiveness in Munktell’s Bränningar.

Taraneh Orchestra presents: Artistic Reflections
Jessie Montgomery – Starburst
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture
Ottorino Respighi – Botticelli Triptych
Johannes Brahms – Hungarian Dances nos. 5-7
In our debut concert, we showcased and celebrated the long standing links between music and other art forms. Starburst started us off with a bang of Montgomery’s inspiration drawn from a diverse range of music from African-American spirituals, civil rights anthems, modern jazz and film scoring. Brahm’s ‘Hungarian Dances’ reflects the strong links between music and dance while Respighi’s ‘Three Bottecelli Pictures’ is inspired by classical visual art. Finishing off the evening was Tchaikovsky’s ‘Romeo and Juliet Overture’, inspired by Shakespeare’s famous literary work!
